Our Golden Mile diary is mostly repeat names: housekeepers at Puente Romano's residences, property managers running lets around the Marbella Club, owners of front-line apartments at Marina Mariola and Alhambra del Mar. The strip they share runs four kilometres from Marbella centre to Puerto Banús, and almost every building on it was designed around glass — picture windows framing the sea, deep terraces wrapped in balustrades, garden façades that slide open to the lawn. Up the hill, Lomas de Marbella Club adds another layer of villas with long westerly views. When that much of a home is transparent, its upkeep stops being cosmetic and becomes maintenance.
Front-line apartments take the heaviest salt load on this coast. A few days of levante is enough to leave a grey crust on seaward glass, and the large single-pane picture windows these buildings favour show every trace of it against the light. The classic villas behind the beach add two problems of their own: garden sprinklers that mist hard water onto ground-floor panes until limescale etches in, and pool surrounds where glass balustrades catch both spray and sunscreen.
